Kathmandu: Krishna Bahadur Mahara, Vice-Chairperson of CPN (Maoist Centre) and former Speaker, who was arrested in connection with a gold smuggling scam, has been released today. However, his release comes with the condition that he must be present when required.
According to Hobindra Bogati, the spokesperson of the Central Investigation Bureau of the Nepal Police, Mahara was released under the guarantee of his son, Nirmal Mahara. This decision was made after the CIB and the District Public Prosecutor's Office in Kathmandu completed recording Mahara's statement.
Mahara was arrested on March 18 in Kapilvastu and later brought to Kathmandu for questioning. Initially, he was held in custody for four days for investigation purposes.
The arrest came after a commission led by former justice Dilli Raj Acharya recommended filing a case against Mahara in connection with the gold smuggling. Following this recommendation, the CIB took him into custody.
